Three Notch’d Brewing – Richmond, VA

Today is our last day for breweries since we go on “lock-down” for the race weekend. We have three to hit today so our first stop is an axe-themed tap room offering a half dozen year-round beers and another 7 seasonals. We tried one of each with the King Of Clouds hazy IPA and the Bright Future west coast IPA. Turns out the brewery is named in honor of Jack Jouett who rode 40 miles in the dark in 1781 during the American Revolution marking trees along the way with 3 notches using an axe. The beers were “chop chop” 🙂

Richbrau Brewing – Richmond, VA

This is a true small batch brewery only offering 5 beers which is a world apart from the mega brewery we just left. We were hoping to eat dinner here but quickly realized the beertender was also the cook with a rapid-cook convection oven that makes pre-made pizzas so we just had a pint of Lager and Penalties & Interest IPA then went on our way

Stone Brewing – Richmond, VA

This mega-brewery is very unique. First, you enter the facility by parking in a lot and cross a bridge over the river to arrive at the brewhouse. The operation is huge offering well over two dozen beers from either this location or the original one in San Diego. They distribute nationwide so you have probably heard of their very popular Arrogant Bastard Ale. We decided on their Dayfest IPA and Hazy but regreted the decision thinking we could have gotten a couple of flights since so many beers sounded so good. Perhaps we should take a trip to SD and try them all!

Legend Brewing – Richmond, VA

This brewery is sort of a barvarian theme with a touch of old world Europe but probably not going to be in business much longer. It’s located in a highly-sought-after industrial district that is being bought up by developers to build condos. We had a couple of sausages and two pints of Oktoberfest marzen to close out the evening.

Basic City Brewing – Richmond, VA

Cool brewery that has bunch of old industrial machines like laths and presses. The beertender picked us out his Baby Bask IPA and Oopsproch lager for first-timers and they didn’t disappoint! And of course we had to snack on some Capt. Salty’s Hot Nuts – yum!

Benchtop Brewing – Richmond, VA

Welcome race fans! Our first stop on this race weekend is a recntly opened brewery in an up-and-coming area of downtown. They don’t have much on tap but the two beers we had were pretty good. We had their Drench grodziskie polish champagne and Crispy Whip house pils. They do specialize in hot dogs offering quite the interesting toppings and lots of canned beers to go.

Ghost Tree Brewing – Amherst, OH

Just five minutes from the last brewery, this place is totally different. Its a large restaraunt in downtown offering not only 10 of their own beers but also a nice variety of guest taps. We had the Canoe Brew pils and Aloha Ohio hazy IPA along with the chicken nachos to end the evening.

ESP Brewing – Amherst, OH

After two months in our hometown, we are back on the road again. We had a little trouble with one of our slideouts but we finally made it to our first stop on the way to the Richmond NASCAR race. We quickly dropped the motorhome & the dogs at a campground then eagerly made our way to this fine little brewery. Maps took us through a small village named Whiskyville on the way so we knew we were on the right track. We bellied-up to the bar and ordered a Table Manners amber ale and a Big Fat Juicy IPA. WOW! These beers were surprisingly awesome. Even though most of their beers were on the menu were stouts and porters, their ales were spot on.

Fulcra Brewing – Sawyer, MI

This cute little brewery is located in an old farm house on the south side of town on the famous Red Arrow Highway. The kitchen was converted into the tasting room with the remaining house having seating for sipping. The Slingin’ cream ale and Bramford brown ale were so good we wished we could have stayed for another round but the trip back to camp was too far.

Lake Time Brewing – Bridgman, MI

The 2nd stop on our Michigan road trip brings us to this neat little brewery on the main street downtown. The owner actually has the Lake Street Eats next door and expanded his operations into brewing beer after the former brewery Tapistry went up for sale. We had a pint of From Another Mother brown ale and Marzen.
