Maltese Brewing – Fredericksburg, VA

When this brewery popped up on the Google Maps search we figured it was maybe dog-themed but we were way wrong. It’s firemen themed with a dozen or so pinball machines. We kicked the weekend off easy with a couple of blondes – the Firemen’s Blonde and the ‘Merica!. Both beers were pretty decent and a great start to a Friday night. Oh, and we asked the beertender how the name connected to firemen and she said she had no idea. Hmmmm.

Retriever Brewing – Allentown, PA

The last stop on our min-tour brings us to a dog themed brewery which is always one of our favorite themes. They serve a decent pizza and several good beers. We had a Cats Ruin Everything Around Me cream ale and Mountain Dog amber lager. Not much else to say other than we head to VA tomorrow for another mini-tour and the countdown to number 800.

Hawk Mountain Brewing – Allentown, PA

Once again, we found another true brewery with 11 great beers, all brewed onsite. This place is a true hidden gem right here in eastern PA. We couldn’t resist trying as many as possible, so we ordered 2 flights that allowed us to try 8 of their beers. Hats off to the brewmaster and the beertender for great beer and great service!

Rising River Brewing – Allentown, PA

We haven’t been to this area since 2020 and there is a few new breweries that opened so this place sounded intriguing be a “Tiki” tap room. Sure enough, it is indeed a Tiki bar outside on a deck with Key West decor and believe it or not, palm trees. Yes, palm trees in Pennsylvania. They brew a few beers onsite and the rest offsite due to space constraints. We started off strong with a Riding Cheetah hazy IPA and East Texas blonde which were a perfect start to our Allentown mini-tour.

ShawneeCraft Brewing – Shawnee On Delaware, PA

We had low expectations for this brewery since it’s part of a golf course and event center but we quickly discovered they make GREAT beer. We had a flight of 10 beers and everything except the seltzer was excellent. (we ordered the seltzer by mistake). This place is a must-visit if you are ever in the Pocono’s!

Battery Island Brewing – Havre de Grace, MD

This tiny town on the Susquehanna River is a must see if you are ever in the Maryland area. Lots of tourist so they need lots of watering holes. This is one of two breweries in the quaint little downtown historic area. It was the former home of Green’s Pharmacy back in the day. We dropped in for a quick fix of Freudian Sip vienna lager and The Vodnik german pils which were just what the doctor prescribed.

5th Company Brewing – Perryville, MD

After a three and a half our drive north from the track, we stopped for the evening in an RV park on the Bush River in Maryland. We walked & fed the dogs then unhitched the Jeep and headed another 20 minutes north to start our Sunday funday mini tour. This brewery not only serves pints but also has a “wall of beer” where you can serve yourself by the ounce. We had the beertender pour us a Festbier oktoberfest and a Liberty Blonde ale which were excellent…..or maybe we were just really thristy!

Final Gravity Brewing – Richmond, VA

We closed out the race weekend mini tour at this interesting brewery with pinball games galore. We had the Summer In Space hoppy lager and Fire Station 5 amber ale in honor of the fire station across the street. In retrospect of the last few days and all the breweries in town, we would compare Richmond to Asheville, NC with the many, many breweries – some good ones, some average ones and some not so good.

Intermission Beer Co. – Richmond, VA

Well, what a disappointment. We should have know by their website and lack of pics in Google that this wouldn’t be what we were expecting. The beers were average, the food was boring and the atmosphere was weak. Most of the beers were guest taps with only 5 beers being their own and the remaining 13 were others. The food offerings were pizza and tots. We had a flatbread with pepperoni & honey and it was just alright. We washed it down with an Up Dog lager and a Oats N’ Hoes hazy IPA. They did have a bunch of video game & pinball but no music and it was deafly quite. The beertender had no personality. Don’t bother making the trip here because this place feels like an ill-conceived concept of trying to make money on craft beers.
