Hidden River Brewing – Douglasville, PA

Well this is something we haven’t experienced since the start of Covid; can beer only! We decided to swing in to this place on our way to meet up with our old friend, Michael. Located along the Schuylkill river in an early 1900’s farmhouse, this place is pretty cool. You would think someone still lives here with all of the furniture and household items still on the shelves and tables. The beer menu left us something to desire but we grabbed the only two beers we could probably enjoy on this hot Saturday afternoon: Floor to Ceiling pale lager and Dark Blumme schwarzbier. Everything else was IPA’s or DIPA’s which was no way to start off a day of day drinking.

Hop Hill Brewing – Bethlehem, PA

Our last stop of the day brings us to a traditional tasting room which is exactly what we love! Located off the beaten path and far from the downtown hustle & bustle, this awesome little brewery serves up a nice variety of tasty brews, two of which are a couple of our favorites. The Drinking Games cream ale and the Austrian Pass vienna lager were two of a dozen offerings the owner Greg has on his menu. Our friendly beer-tender Paul also kept us smiling with his engaging conversation – someone tell Greg that Paul needs a raise!

Bonn Place Brewing – Bethlehem, PA

Stop #2 on this beautiful Saturday afternoon takes us just 5 minutes from the last brewery. We were greeted at the door by a joyful beer-tender and seated at a 2-high-barrel table where we ordered up a Mooey nitro pub ale and a Helles Mosaic pale lager from the menu of 9 beers. This cheerful and upbeat tasting room was a nice compliment ot the fine beers.

Seven Sirens Brewing – Bethlehem, PA

Things have been rough for the past 4 weeks up here in PA with regards to the weather. Most weekends are cool or rainy but spring finally broke so we ventured out to hit some breweries on this fine Saturday afternoon. 1st stop was this gem of a brewery hidden away in what appeared to be an old Wells Fargo branch. Located in a quiet part of town in the unsuspecting bank building, this tasting room was quite the contrast from the prior tenant although the drive-up canopy and ATM are still in place. We ordered up the Blue Falcon helles lager and a Road Runner mexican lager then made our way to the outdoor seating area to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Saucony Creek Brewery – Kutztown, PA

3rd time’s a charm! The first time we stopped by this place it was a 45 minute wait to get in and the second time they were closed. Not really what we had in mind to celebrate Cinco de Mayo but the other two Mexican restaurants in this one-horse town were misses as well. One was no dine-in and the other didn’t serve beer – can’t celebrate Cinco without cerveza! So we bellied-up to the bar and ordered a Golden Bear pilsner and Kellerbock kellerbier from their selection of over a dozen locally-sourced ingredient beers. In honor of the holiday, we indulged in their Churizo and Cauliflower tacos washing them down with another round of beers but this time trying the Night Crickets IPA. Everything at this place was delicious!

Golden Avalanche Brewing – Kutztown, PA

Tucked away inside the Kutztown Tavern, this hidden gem is a must-visit if you ever come to the area. We are always a little weary when there is a brewery inside something else but this one is the real deal. We first visited this place a week before when we met the owner and they had just reopened after being closed for Covid for over a year. The beer menu was very limited at the time but the owner said more beers were coming next week. So here we are and he wasn’t lying. Our first visit had us drinking a Miller Lite and their Tinderbox smoked lager. The Miller Lite was, well, you know but the Tinderbox was way too smokey for our taste. But this round was a homerun. The freindly beer-server hooked us up with not only a delicious Blonde Lager & Youngallen’s Lager but also a couple of tasters of the Blueberry Lager and one of his mixed combinations of the Blueberry and Bourbon Stout that he called Black & Blue. Everything from the beer to the crab dip to the shepard’s pie was awesome!

Funk Brewing – Allentown, PA

Our last stop of the day brings us to the perfect tasting room. Or so it seemed. The building looks like an old auto repair/ service station with two garage doors in line – front to back. With fermenting and mash tanks surrounded by tables & chairs as well as an outside seating area, we expected to be totally immersed in the craft beer experience only to find ourselves disappointed with the beer. First, the selection really wasn’t our style and second was taste. Yes, while the Funktober marzen was pretty decent, the Left Look red ale totally disgusting. The smell reminded me of a Port-O-Potty and tasted like a urinal cake (if I could imagine what one tasted like). Good thing we had plenty of Dot’s Pretzles to snack on to help us get it down!

Yergey Brewing – Allentown, PA

Known as a nano-brewery instead of a micro-brewery, the small beer menu reflects the fact that this brewery truely does small batch only and there is only 4 vessels right in the tasting room. Nothing on the menu sounded good to us so we went out on a limb with the Oat In A Boat oatmeal stout and The Heart Has It’s Saison hibiscus saison. Not a couple of our favorites but drinkable.

Fegley’s Brew Works – Allentown, PA

Our 2nd stop on this windy & cool but sunny afternoon bring us just one block from the last brewery. This unusually quiet restaurant/bar serves up a pretty good variety of about a dozen beers; something for everyone. We kept it simple with a Stimulate My Pils and a Suburban Kolsch but did try a taster of their Wiggity Wiggity Wack Wit and a Tropical Umbrella IPA which we got a 4-pack to go!

Bru Daddy’s Brewing – Allentown, PA

Located in the City Center, we kicked off our Satur-day-drinking with lunch and a “bru” at the Covid separated bar. Intrigued by the Granny’s Bakeshop cinnamon roll pale ale, we got a taster of that before moving on to the Playa Fiesta mexican lager and the Hamilton Street Helles lager. Both were excellent “bru’s” as was the delicious K-Pop korean BBQ pizza. Oh, and of course we took a 4-pack of the Granny to go!
