Red Oak Brewery – Whitsett, NC

It’s been a couple of weeks since we got religious in Texas and visited Barvaria in Tennessee but I think we just died and went to beer heaven! What’s not to love about Munich-inspired beer, a biergarten, lagerhaus and of course bratwurst! The brewing operations here is hugh but the beer list is small only offering 4 beers on tap. In business, you can do a lot of things good or just a few things great. That’s what they do here: awesome beers and awesome brats! We don’t normally like large breweries like this but you ever pass through the northeast part of North Carolina, you must stop and visit this brewery.

The haus instead of the handles!

Toasty Kettlyst Beer Co. – Gibsonville, NC

Named after well, nothing in particular, this tasting room is located in an old furniture store in the heart of the historic downtown. This great little place is exactly what we love: low key, no kids, great conversation and great beer. This no frills joint focuses on about a dozen quality beers. We really enjoyed the Wee Bit Export scottish ale and the recently released 12 to 12 IPA. Both of these beers paired well with our Dot’s Pretzels.

Burlington Beer Works – Burlington, NC

What respectable tasting room closes at 3:00p on a Sunday? This one! We arrived just in time to order up a Mexican Lager and an English Pale Ale after hastely driving from the local Home Depot. The beers were pretty good but the grumpy beertender sort of ruined the overall experience. Someone must have stayed out too late last night 🙂

Little Brothers Brewery – Graham, NC

We’re not letting a few drops of rain slow us down today so we decided to do a 4th brewery on this hot Saturday afternoon in the heart of downtown. While they don’t technically brew here, this tasting room is one block from the court house and only offers about 6 beers that they brew offsite in Greensboro. The friendly and helpful beertender let us try just about everything before we settled on the Schwartz Weather dark lager and the Casual Sesh seasion IPA. Both beers were pretty tasty but the Mexican Cake taster was the best!

Forgotten Road Ales – Graham, NC

Ahhh…..finally a place to sit inside. This brewery obviously got the memo and we were lucky to find a barrel table to enjoy The Recruit blonde ale and a Shannon Drive scottish ale. The blonde ale was tasty but the scottish ale was little light for our liking.

Steel String Brewery – Mebane, NC

Looks like we found the other brewery that didn’t get the Covid reopening memo. It’s also another brewery that we lothe: kid and family centric with a playground and all. And on top of that, they are celebrating “mid-summer” where most people are wearing head dresses of flowers reminescent of the 70’s flower children. Are we in North Carolina or Woodstock? Any who, we made our way from the pasture parking lot up to the taproom window and ordered their Dad’s Fuel pale ale and the Oaks Gold lager just before they ran out. It was nice to drink out of something other than a can but the platic cup is for amateures.

Haw River Brewery – Graham, NC

This brewery must not have gotten the memo that Covid restrictions have been lifted. After driving 25 minutes from our campsite to the middle of nowhere, we were met in the parking lot by a tent with ‘cans only’ beer service. We haven’t seen something like this in quite a while. Not sure if it was Covid related but they were limiting tap room occupancy to “reservations only” so we grabbed a can of Saxapahaw Pale Ale and a can of Calico Fields Classic Pils and found a shaded spot on a wood bench to pop the tops & take in the scenery.

Panther Creek Brews – Murfreesboro, TN

The only other brewery in the big town of MFB brings us to this tiny little brewery where the owner/brewmaster is serving up just 5 of his own beers and another 10 guest taps. None of his beers were really our style – three IPA’s, a mexican lager and a chocolate stout. We taste-tested them all and settled for the Juicy On Main IPA, Tres Reyes mexican lager and the Unholy Creations peanut butter chocolate stout. The stout was the only one we really liked (Brian took a 4-pack to go) but the owners advice to eat at Empanada Sonata was a home run!

Mayday Brewery – Murfreesboro, TN

After a crazy night at the speedway campground, we decided to venture out to a brewery or two that’s a shorter drive than Nashville. Plus, we pretty much have done them all downtown. This neat little brewery has a pretty good variety of beers along with some eclectic artwork for sale by local artists. We had the Kolsch and the Blonde Ale and our best buds Brian and Melissa came along and enjoyed the Red Ale and Blonde Ale.

Soul Fire Brewing – Roanoke, TX

Well this is another first: a brewery attached to a food court. But not just your average mall food court, a food court with a unique selection. Potatoes, barbeque, tacos, hot dogs, burgers even a chocolate place specializing in tantalizing cookies & popcorn. All of this is part of the Oak St. Food & Brew complex located in this quaint little town well north of Fort Worth. The smell alone of everything we love is enough to drive you crazy. We jumped right in with a Flavus Maximus blonde ale and a Francis vienna lager followed by a brisket sandwich & loaded hashbrowns. Heaven has been found and its right here in north Texas. God blessed Texas!
