White Oak Brewing – Normal, IL

After leaving St. Louis, we decided to stop in Blommington, IL to check out a few breweries before arriving in Indiana. Just dropped the motorhome at the TA truck stop and headed 5 minutes to find this jewel of a tap room. They only had 6 beers on draft but they pick quality over quantity. We got a flight of the Troll So Hard wheat, Holla Atcha blonde ale, Extra Medium Mild mild and Rippin’ Lips session IPA. The beers started a little rough after we burned-down the Moose last night where we camped for the night in St. Charles but in the end, we came around to liking the wheat beer the best.

Urban Chestnut Brewing – St. Louis, MO

Ahhhh – it doesn’t get any better than a German-inspired brewery. This place offers a little over a dozen beers and has a “beer hall”. It’s like a beirgarten except indoors and has long tables and bench seating. They don’t offer flights so we ordered a pint of Zwickel Bavarian Lager and Stammtisch German Pilsner. Both beer were delicious and reminded us why german beers is 2nd to none and the Bavarian Purituy Laws are so important!

2nd Shift Brewing – St. Louis, MO

We walked into this brewery just in time to watch the Cubs get smoked 14 to 5 by the Cards on TV. We are acutally going to a Cubs game in Milwakee on July 4th with some friends from Indiana and look forward to hitting some breweries in Wisconsin. We drank a flight of Kolsch, Elvis Alt german altbeir, Little Big Hop NE session IPA and Half Hit session stout with cinnamon

Rockwell Brewing – St. Louis, MO

We are diggin’ the theme/decor of this brewery. The taproom and outdoor beirgarten area is made with all shipping containers. This is exactly what we want to do with our garage on 7th Ave. We sat in wonder looking at all the unique details while sipping on 8 oz. pours of Crisp Chinos rice lager, Boombox Generation cream ale, First Available IPA and Static dark lager since they don’t offer flights. Our favorite was of course the IPA with the dark lager coming in at a close 2nd.

4 Hands Brewing – St. Louis, MO

So we stopped by this place two years ago during Covid but they weren’t open. Boy are we glad they are now. They have some phoenominal beer. We had a flight of State Wide hazy pale ale, Divided Sky west coast rye IPA, Ripple belgian white ale and Nitro Irish Stout. It is this place today drinking the Divided Sky where we decided we must go out to the northeast and hit the breweries in Washington and Oregon.

Bluewood Brewing – St. Louis, MO

Located on the edge of the Cherokee Lemp Historic District, this former horse stable for the carriages that delivered the beer from nearby Anheuser- Busch is a cool place with antiques and vintage decor. We kicked off our Gateway Raceway NASCAR weekend with a flight of Bananas & Blow hefe, Pink City APA, Current Affair amber lager and Marooned Marauder black IPA. The hefe didn’t have a lot of notes of banana or bubblegum as promised but not bad for a hefe. All the other beers were spot-on with our favorite being the black IPA.

Elderbrew – Bristol, TN

Where else can you walk across the street from one brewery into another and be in a different state? And we’re not talking state of mind. But, this might not qualify as an actual brewery since they have 11 guest taps and only one in-house brew. You could call this the worlds smallest brewery with only 3 small vessels on the back room. We tried the Thai Finger pad tai IPA which was advertised as spicy pepper flavored but not all that bad. It started out as a typical IPA but finished with some heat.

State Street Brewing – Bristol, VA

Before our visit a couple of weeks ago to visit MWB, the last time we were in town was 2017 when there were zero breweries and now, five years later there are 3. This brewery is right in the heart of downtown in an old retail store converted to a large tap room. Wide open spaces with a ping-pong table, ski-ball, foosball and other adult games backed by the brewing operations behind the bar. We got a flight of Revel pale ale, Dad Hat kolsch, Day Dreaming blonde ale and Long Tom peanut butter porter. We were impressed that the blonde ale wasn’t overwhelming with orange or vanilla and the porter only has subtle notes of PB.

Blowing Rock Brewing – Hickory, NC

So you have probably heard of “gods country” but this town is the “beer gods country”. We arrived at this brewery just before a huge storm with tornado warnings and everything hit. What better place to be hunkered-down than a brewery with great beer and great food. Started started with a flight of 5 beers and the White Cheddar Poblano cheese dip served with warm pita wedges seasoned with fresh dill. Our friendly beertender shared stories of her trip to Nashville and served us a flight of Cowboy Dreams wheat on nitro, Kolsch, The Bestie west coast IPA, Red Rider amber ale and Scotch Ale. All freakin’ awesome. After the pitas & cheese, decided to stay for dinner and ordered the Bison Stout brick oven pizza. Yes, a true “buffalo” pizza but not the one with chicken and hot sauce – the one with buffalo meat. By the time we got a our pizza, the flight ran out so we ordered pints of the High Country pale ale and a taster of the Streams Of Stars belgian triple. Again, all very tasty and paired well with our “tatanka pie”
