Brickyard Hollow – Portland, ME

Our last stop on this Sunday – funday keeps us down the by waterfront at a nice little brewery serving up eight beers and a view of the docks. Today’s menu has four IPA’s and a mix of everything else so we went with the Kolsch and the Send It! DIPA. Neither one disappointed with the kolsch offering some relief from the heat and the DIPA offering s full bodied, kick-in-the-pants brew. The highlight of this brewery was watching the live video feed of the penguins from the Kansas City Zoo.

Gritty McDuff’s Brew Pub – Portland, ME

Is it a brewery or a pub? Well, its claim is to be the oldest brewery in Maine so I guess its both. Yes, they do have their own beers and they brew in the basement. They don’t offer flights so we ordered a couple of pints of Vacation Time summer ale and Party Time IPA and sat at the front window whatching the world walk by. And as a bonus, there was a guided tour going on behind us so we got to evesdrop on hearing the history of this place. Sure enough, if what that guy was saying is true, we could very well be sitting in the oldest brewery in Maine.

Liquid Riot Bottling – Portland, ME

Part brewery – part distillery. Located down on the docks, we walked in the door and were immediatly welcomed by some Bob Marley thumping on the house music. It might even be Regae Sunday? Regardless, we cast our nets and pulled in a flight of Primus belgium blonde, Nama japanese lager, Renaissance Red amber ale and Head Stash IPA. Ahoy matey, the IPA was the catch of the day!

Stars & Stripes Brewing – Portland, ME

Located right in the heart of downtown and owned & operated by a marine veteran, we kicked off our Sunday – funday with a flight of lighter beers consisting of the Semper Fi.P.A, Crayon Crusher DIPA, Platoon Pale Ale and the Private Pilsner. The Semper was a superb west coast IPA and a rare find here on in the northeast. Pretty cool decor with spent shell casings expoxied into the bar top and large bullets as tap handles.

Nonesuch River Brewing – Portland, ME

The 17th and stop of our New England mini-tour brings us to this large tap room and kitchen serving up ten beers from all origins. We kicked things off with their 5-beer flight of Blonde ale, IPA 2.0, Maple cream ale, Irish Red ale and their Double IPA followed by an order of pretzel bite & beer cheese. Everything is better with beer cheese. This place came highly recommended from a patron named Tim at the last brewery we were at and he wasn’t wrong. Beers were good, food was good and service was great.

Island Dog Brewing – Portland, ME

Another winner! Not only is this place a nice little taproom with an awesome selection of beer but is also dog friendly, supporting the local shelters and canine causes. We “donated to their cause” with a flight of Captain Tucker cream ale, Foggy Beach NEIPA, 3 Bouy brown ale and a Salted Caramel amber ale.

Fore River Brewing – Portland, ME

Now this is more like it! Craft brewing at its finest. Small, intimate setting with simple decor and great, great, great beer. Live music on the patio and cold beer inside. With a dozen beers on tap, we went with the Kolsch, Surfaces IPA, Timberhinch red ale and the Shady Cover oyster stout. Not really sure where the “oyster” comes into play but it was the best of the four. Just the right amount of stout but not overbearing.

Sea Dog Brewing – Portland, ME

TOTALLY BUMMED! We were looking forward to visiting the world-famous brewery only to find out this is nothing more than a restaraunt branded for and serves the beer. They have eight beers on tap and just about everything they ever made in cans. We grudgingly ordered a pint of their popular blueberry ale & their pale ale and sat at the bar pouting about our disappointment that the actual brewery is in Bangor, not Portland which is another two hours north. Wait, isn’t that Canada?

Blaze Brewing – Biddeford, ME

Record-high heat drove us to seek a cooler brewery with inside seating but as luck would have it, the AC is broke here so we sweated it out and ordered a flight of beer and a brisket sandwich. The Looking At The Clouds blonde ale, Satello pils, Blazing Love blueberry sour and the Bangin’ Chains NEIPA were all very good but the Love was surprisingly mellow for being a blueberry and a sour.

Kennebunk Brewing – Kennebunk, ME

Another restaurant offering craft beer, this brewery actually calls their restaurant Federal Jack’s and only serves their beer in the reataurant. Good thing is they do serve up flights so we got an Export Ale, Taint Town Pale Ale, Old Thumper ESB and a Belgian Blonde ale. The beers were delicious and the crab rangoon dip was awesome.
